Making History since 1906

The University of Nottingham Hockey Club has been making history since it was founded in 1906 and has never been in a stronger position. We have been winning University competitions since they began, including University Athletic Union Gold in 1965. The club made history again in 2022 by becoming the first-ever university hockey club to have both 1st teams in the England Hockey Premier Division, with both teams retaining their Premier Division status for the upcoming 23/24 season.

In British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions, we are now the stand-alone largest club in the UK and the only club to ever have a team in both the Men's and Ladies' BUCS Championship Finals. We achieved this feat in consecutive years, with the Men's and Ladies' first teams winning their respective BUCS Championships in 2023, building on the Ladies' 2022 BUCS Championship title and creating history.

About Uonhc

The University of Nottingham Hockey Club is the largest performance sports club at the university with over 300 members across 14 competitive teams and 2 development teams, with an equal split between Men’s and Ladies. We also run an intramural league and beginner sessions which typically reaches another 60 students.

We have 12 teams competing in England Hockey leagues, with players travelling across the country providing wide exposure at a variety of different levels. In 2021/2022 season both of our 1st teams gained promotion to their highest respective England Hockey leagues – Premier Division. We’re the first ever university to have both 1st teams in the Premier Division. The men's 2nd XI are also playing in a national league – Conference Midlands, following promotion in 2021/2022 season. This sets our status as one of the best clubs in the UK, not just among universities.

The club is one of the most successful and prestigious University hockey sides in the country, with 14 teams competing within the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues, the largest of all BUCS hockey clubs. Both the Men’s and Ladies 1st XI compete in the highest BUCS league in the UK – the BUCS Premier (National) league. Our Men’s and Ladies 2nd XI compete in one league below – the BUCS Premier (North) league – with the Men’s 2nd XI winning the league during the 2021/22 season. In the BUCS Championship Cup, the Men’s and Ladies 1st XI reached the Championship Final held at the pinnacle BUCS event – BUCS Big Wednesday – with the Ladies 1st XI taking home the Gold. We are the first club to ever have a team in both the men’s and ladies BUCS Championship Final in the same year.

Our lower teams still perform at a very high level. For example, our Men’s 4th XI play in the same BUCS league as Loughborough’s 2nd XI, the highest performing 4th XI in the country. Within the 2021/22 BUCS Trophies, 3 teams reached the regional Conference Finals, with the Ladies 4th XI securing Gold and both the Men’s and Ladies 5th XI taking home a Silver.

We have many alumni who have gained international caps, some of these include Annie Panter, Jo Hunter, James Gall, Tom Sorsby, George Pinner, Esme Burge and Alex Malzer for Great Britain, as well as USA captain Mohan Gandhi. You can see the full list of international honours on our website. One of our most esteemed alumni is Rob Clift who won Olympic Gold with GB in 1988. Another is Nike Lorenz who captained Germany women at the Tokyo Olympics before coming to UoN. We have 10 members training and competing internationally within the Great Britain Elite Development Program (EDP). Our members hold numerous junior international caps, including 2022 Junior World Cup Bronze for 5 members of the Ladies 1st XI. We have current members who show great promise to be the next big names in international hockey.
